The Stone Cutter House Murder
On August 1st, 1867, the body of a Black man was found half-buried and partly decomposed in the old Stone Cutter's house, located at the quarry in Stone Cutter's Bay at the north end of Salt Spring Island. The cabin was partly burnt, possibly in order to hide the murder. Two Black men were known to have been living in the cabin the previous winter. A prominent White resident was seen in the vicinity with a gun at the same time as the cabin was on fire.
A hundred years later an amateur archaeologist examined the site. His account illustrates that history is the discovery of new knowledge about the past. Looking at the other documents, you will know more than the archaeologist.
