Weakening of the commune
In the weeks and months after Verigin’s death the Doukhobor commune seemed to be assailed from every quarter – a private loan company and then the government of British Columbia. Then the B.C. Provincial Police led a gang of road construction workers in an aggressive raid on the commune. Did they sense that the Doukhobors were especially vulnerable following their leaders’ death?
